Anver Yasin

Anver is our club chairman and has had a very successful 2010 so far completing the Two Oceans and Comrades successfully. We caught up with Anver on one of this power runs and squeezed these answers out of him.

Q. What was your motivation to start running?

A. My main aim with running is to improve and maintain my health. I am very happy with my progress in this aspect of my life

Q. How long have you been running?

A. I started about four years ago. This year has been my best year by far with successful finishes in the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons.

Q. What is the highlight of your running career so far?

A. My answer is clear, definitely this years Oceans & Comrades. After a tough run at last years Comrades, I was very motivated to ensure success this year. And my training has definitely paid off.

Q. Which distance do you best enjoy running?

 A. I am good at all distances but prefer the half-marathon which requires speed and a touch of endurance.

Q. What type of training do you do?
A. I have a set programme for the week which includes long slow runs of about 10 - 12 km on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. On the weekend I do either a race or a 2 hour slow run.

Q. Do you do any specialist training sessions?
A. I try to do at least one hill-work a week at Rhodes Memorial. These have really managed to strengthen my legs for the ultras.

Q. What is the biggest challenge to your training?

A.  With so many commitments in life, it is difficult to stay focused & motivated on running which requires a lot of time on the road.

Q. What is the one item you must have during any race?

A.  An energy drink for the short races and a protein drink for a longer marathons and ultras.

Q. What is the best running advice that has been given to you?

A. That would definitely be to stretch before and after a race. Also the advice to run slow and concentrate on maintaining a comfortable pace has done wonders for my success in the ultras. I try not to run too fast at the beginning and know that once the heavy breathing starts I am doing too much work. I am very aware of working too hard early in the ultras as this is a risk for burn-out.

Q. Do you do any cross-training.

A. No, but I specifically concentrate on activities that help me to develop strong stomach and back muscles. this has definitely helped me with the longer distance races.

Q. Do you run through the winter months?

A. Yes, like most other runners I am not easily scared-off running by the cold and wet. it is important to maintain a positive attitude and I see opportunity in everything. I am one of those glass half-full people.

Well with that positive attitude Anver is definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the running fraternity. Here are a couple of his pictures from this years pasta evening, cross country race and 2010 Comrades.
